Surface 3D- Webbasiertes Tool für die Verbrennungsdokumentation

Especially in the health care sector, documentation is very important. For treatment of burn injuries, it is essential to cover the treatment process correctly. To identify the best treatment for burn injuries, the burn size and burn depth must be estimated accurately. Depending on the burn depth the trauma is assigned to a certain category. Each of the categories requires a different treatment process. At the moment, there already are some ways to estimate the burn surface area. The simplest is just guessing the size of the area. Using this technique, the outcome clearly relies on the physician’s sense of proportion. So this method is the fastest but tends to be quite inaccurate. A more accurate strategy is utilizing the Lund Browder Charts from 1944. In these charts, the body is separated in different body regions. Depending on the age of the patient every region has another percentage of the total body surface area (TBSA). For example, the hand of an adult has 1% TBSA. There are many other techniques and tools used in the clinical practise. Most tools have the disadvantage that they do not cover abnormal body proportions and cannot be customized. If a person has an amputation, for example, there is no easy way to estimate the burn surface area correctly, using one of these tools. An incorrect estimation could lead to severe consequences, as the estimated parameters are used to calculate how much fluid is given to the patient. Too much or too less liquid is extremely harmful for the patient and could end up in the deathofthepatient. Anerrorinthecategorizationmayleadtoanunnecessaryoperation. Classical estimation tools produce estimation errors of more than 100%. Surface 3D, a program developed by the author of this work in the RISC Software GmbH in Hagenberg, solves this problem. It offers personalized 3D models of the specific patient so that theburnsofthepatientcanbeselecteddirectlyinthecustomized3Dmodel. Basedonthe edited model, Surface 3D calculates the TBSA so that the physician can develop the optimal treatment process. Surface 3D aims at supporting medics, optimizing the treatment process, and increasing the quality of the treatment for the patient.
