Test and Validation of Bluetooth Sensors with Traffic Data

To provide high quality traffic information within a large network coverage new sensor types and their algorithms are constantly developed. One possible sensor type for gaining traffic information on a constant route is via Bluetooth. Various companies develop sensors, which differ in hardware and software (implemented algorithms). To decide which sensor can be implemented in large areas a test setting, to compare three contributing providers, was built up in 2017. In this paper (i) an insight of the difference of each sensor type is provided, (ii) the results of the test setting compared to further data sets are discussed and (iii) the pro and cons after enrollment over a large area of the Bluetooth sensors is discussed. Finally, a recommendation for the selection of Bluetooth sensors and their detection strategy is given.
