RISC Institute and RISC Software GmbH

RISC Software GmbH was founded as a spin-off of the RISC Institute at JKU. While the institute conducts basic research, the GmbH translates this into practical software solutions and industrial applications.

RISC – Research, Education, and Applications United in One Place

The RISC in Hagenberg unites research, education, and applications in a unique synergy where these three areas inspire and enrich one another. This close integration creates a dynamic environment that combines scientific excellence with practical innovations.

RISC Institute: Basic Research and Education at the Highest Level

The RISC Institute is an internationally recognized center for basic research and education in computational mathematics and symbolic computation. Complex mathematical problems are studied here, and innovative approaches are developed, paving the way for new advancements in science. Students benefit from practical training that bridges theory and application, preparing them optimally for future challenges.

RISC – How It All Began

The Research Institute for Symbolic Computation (RISC) is an institute of Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz, Austria. It is part of the Department of Mathematics in the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences (TNF) at JKU. Additionally, RISC is part of the Softwarepark Hagenberg, an innovative center for research, education, and industry cooperation focused on software, established around 1990 by Bruno Buchberger, the founding director of RISC.

From 1999 to 2009, Franz Winkler chaired RISC; from 2009 to 2023, Peter Paule served as director, and since October 2023, Carsten Schneider has been the head of the institute.

The main location of RISC is the Bruno-Buchberger Campus in the Softwarepark Hagenberg, consisting of two main buildings: the medieval Hagenberg Castle and the RISC extension, built near the pond in 2013.

RISC Software GmbH: Innovation Through Technology Transfer

RISC Software GmbH brings research results into practice. It develops customized software solutions and works on applied research projects that integrate algorithmic mathematics and modern software technologies. Its applications range from medicine (e.g., diagnostic support, surgery preparation) to industry (e.g., production, energy), various economic sectors, science (e.g., solving complex problems in particle physics), and administration (e.g., efficiency improvements through digitization).

The close collaboration between the RISC Institute and RISC Software GmbH creates a bridge between scientific research and economic practice. Together, they develop technologies that advance science and provide real value to society and the economy.

The Softwarepark Hagenberg

The RISC Institute is a founding member of the Softwarepark Hagenberg, initiated by Bruno Buchberger. His vision was to unite science, economy, and research at a single location. Since its foundation, RISC Software GmbH has been part of this location.

What is Symbolic Computation?

Symbolic computation is a subfield of computational mathematics focusing on the algorithmic manipulation of mathematical symbols, such as numbers or geometric objects. Modern advanced mathematics relies heavily on symbolic representations. Thus, symbolic computation forms the core of contemporary mathematics. It also has numerous connections to computer science and artificial intelligence.
