We3D²: Intelligent Wire-Based Additive Manufacturing

The COMET project We3D² focuses on wire-based additive manufacturing (w-DED) and develops materials, process control, and data technologies to manufacture complex metal components more efficiently, sustainably, and with assured quality.

Additive Manufacturing as a Key Technology

Additive manufacturing (AM) has become a key technology in modern manufacturing. It enables the production of complex structures with near-final-contour accuracy, thereby contributing to greater efficiency and sustainability. The European Union views AM as a key technology for a greener and digitally connected future. Despite the growing market, barriers such as challenges in the materials supply chain, quality assurance, and digitalization, as well as uncertainties regarding cost-effectiveness and training, are hindering broader market penetration.

Focus on wire-based additive manufacturing (w-DED)

We3D² aims to tap into the potential of high-value-added industries in Austria and the European Union, such as the automotive, aerospace, construction equipment, and chemical industries. The project focuses on four key areas:

  • AddMaterials: New and Specific Materials for Wire-DED
  • AddControl: New Sensor and Control Systems for wire-DED
  • AddVirtual: Advanced Simulation Tools and Workflows for Wire-DED
  • AddData: Data-Driven Methods for Quality Forecasting and Advisory Systems

Data-Driven Processes Using Machine Learning and AI

The core strategic initiative “Data-Driven Intelligent Process Using ML & AI” overcomes process complexities through machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) and supports operators in the efficient production of complex structures. The data-driven approach improves process stability and autonomy while simultaneously increasing part quality and reducing raw material consumption, lead times, and costs.

Contribution of RISC Software GmbH

RISC Software GmbH is involved in two key areas of the project: advanced sensing and control, and data-driven, intelligent processes based on machine learning and artificial intelligence. In this way, RISC is contributing its expertise in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data science directly to the further development of the w-DED process.

The consortium

Under the leadership of the LKR Light Metal Competence Center in Ranshofen, We3D² brings together 14 industry partners and 5 academic partners. This interdisciplinary collaboration improves material processing through w-DED-compatible high-performance alloys, optimized process parameters, and advanced sensor and control systems.

Sustainable and Competitive Manufacturing

Through market-oriented goals and close collaboration between industry and academia, We3D² aims to realize the full potential of w-DED and ensure that Europe maintains its leadership position in the field of advanced manufacturing technologies. The integration of digital tools, advanced sensor technologies, and data-driven automation approaches leads to more efficient and sustainable manufacturing of competitive products.
